Search Engine Optimisation SEO

During a recent networking event in Birmingham, I was asked “how can I get my website to appear higher on Google?” and “why do competitor websites appear above mine?”. Luckily enough, I had recently attended a university lecture on this very subject matter (lucky right) and was pleased to relay my new found knowledge.

How can I improve my websites position on Google?

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page, in a search engines natural or unpaid search results. Simply, influencing the position of your website on Google, Bing etc.

Sounds great, but before we can begin influencing the visibility of a website on a search engine, we must firstly understand how search engines work.

Simply, search engines use spiders or crawlers to quickly search their dictionary of websites and position the websites they hold on their database in order based on their popularity and relevance to the search.

So how does search engine optimisation work?

By optimising your websites layoutcontent including text, html, the inclusion of keywords and backlinks, you are helping your website to become visible to those search engine spiders, making it clear that your website is highly relevant to the search.

Having identified that your website is highly relevant, the spiders will position your website or web page, highly upon its results pages, ideally at the top of page 1!

With a high Google positioning, your website is significantly more likely to be seen and viewed by your target audience, with a recorded 90% of searchers reluctant to click past the first page when searching online.

Appearing on the first page of Google, Bing etc. will help improve your brand awareness, association and attract more visitors to your website which could lead to gaining new customers! (So its worth doing and doing it well)
